Throughout our lives, we encounter people & groups that make a difference in the lives of others. They deserve our honor & recognition.
As we stop and think about these leaders, it is not hard to identify the skills and qualities which make up their character.
We often think that these people or groups deserve recognition for their service, commitment, achievement, and goodwill.
The NIC’s Awards of Distinction recognize the people and groups who make a difference for fraternities. These men advance the ideals of fraternity in their daily lives. They are committed to brightening the future of fraternity and ensuring that fraternities are living to their espoused mission and values.
These men are proud of their fraternal involvement and willingly sacrifice their own desires for then good of the whole… they are selfless. For these men, the ritual of the fraternity is more than a ceremony to be endured… it is a way of life, a daily habit. They are vigilant in the fight to advance the fraternal ideal.
Undergraduate Member
This leader acts in a manner that goes beyond the standard of membership for his fraternity… serves as a role model for others... has conviction for his values and never compromises... leads others to action... teaches other about his fraternity through his daily actions... is innovative... is results oriented... focuses attention on the community and the needs of others... has compassion... stands up for those less fortunate... is involved in community activities... takes time for reflection and self-improvement... admits mistakes and grows.

This group cares about the greater good... is motivated by the success of others... identifies the needs of the community and works to meet those needs... lives the ritual of the fraternity, at all times... holds others accountable to the standards of the group... has excellence in scholarship... provides ethical leadership for the community... values service to and for others... represents the diversity of their campus... stands firm in the face of adversity... provides assistance to others, before being asked... is cutting edge and different from the rest... carries the flag of interfraternal spirit.
Alumnus
This leader has provided continuous support to his fraternity/community through time, talent, and personal gifts... plays an active role in advancing fraternity at the local, regional, and/or national level... is community focused... demands the best... is a role model for ethical leadership... teaches values through daily action... encourages the involvement and support of other alumni... has an unyielding fraternal spirit.
The nomination process for the Awards of Distinction is intentionally simple and may be submitted by anyone in the fraternal community. The nominator’s goal is to create a submission which brings the person or group alive in the minds of the reviewer.
Examples of nominations...
- The fraternity executive office nominates their outstanding chapters.
- The vice president for student affairs nominates the IFC or student leader.
- The campus advisor nominates the IFC, outstanding fraternity, and/or campus leader.
- The IFC nominates an outstanding chapter president.
- The chapter president nominates an outstanding senior.
- The chapter nominates their devoted advisor.
- The fraternity executive office nominates a deserving alumnus.
- The campus advisor nominates the fraternity advisor of the year.
Nominations may be submitted in any combination of the following:
Video Provide an unedited video testimonial which shows the character of the individual or group. The video may be 5-7 minutes in length. The video should show the impact the leader has had within the community. If you choose this method, spend more time on the content included, rather than on the style and format of the video.
CDRom Provide a CDRom which contains text, photos, streaming video, and/or supporting documents that shows the character of the individual or group. The CD should be easily navigated and describe the impact the leader has had within the community. Download onto the CD important supporting information.
PowerPoint® Slide Show Email a completed power point slide show that showcases the character of the individual or group. Include testimonials, supporting materials, and descriptions. Make sure to fully describe what impact the leader has had on the community. Don’t hesitate to include photos that tell the leader’s story.
Web Page Develop a web page for your nomination. Include Flash® graphics that describe the character of the individual or group. Be as creative as you wish in developing the page, but make sure to be thorough. Technology allows voice stream as well!
Packet Provide a small packet of information (a letter of support, copies of newspaper articles, and photos of events) that proves the character of the individual or group. The packet should be purposefully edited by the nominator.
Make sure to include contact information for your nominee as well as your name, title, organization, and contact information. Submissions become the intellectual property of the NIC and may be used in a variety of publications and presentations in the future.
