Academy Goals top of page

This year represents the fourth year of the IFC Academy . The NIC believes that part of our commitment to our member fraternities lies in Advocating on behalf of the fraternity movement, Collaborating with our partners; including other umbrella groups, higher education associations, and industry leaders, and Educating our members about trends, norms, and best-practices throughout the Greek world.

We believe that IFC's can benefit by hearing from fraternity executives, NIC professional staff, attorneys, and other industry leaders on how they can be a values-based organization that is truly advocating for the needs of fraternity life on their campus. The outcomes of attendance at Academy 2008:

  • A renewed passion for engaging and enhancing the fraternity community on your campus.
  • Tangible benchmarks to measure success on your campus.
  • Tools to assess how you should be responding to the needs of your member chapters.
  • A process to implement the NIC Standards for Campuses.

Retreat Opportunities top of page

The Hilton has multiple suites which sleep 6 and have a conference table and work area that would set up perfectly for an officer retreat while on site. When making reservations with the Hilton be sure to mention you would like the King Suite. These rooms carry a very nominal increase in expense.

NIC Staff would love to be a part of your retreat. Let us know early!

Who Should Attend top of page

In working with the undergraduate leaders and campus advisors who have attended the program in the past, we know that the Academy experience provides valuable information and lessons that can be easily implemented on campus. We have intentionally kept the registration fee to the minimum in order to allow for more participation from councils. We encourage you to send as many IFC leaders as you can, since past graduates have indicated that the change process is easier when more people have heard the message and bought into the change initiative.

IFC Presidents – For the IFC President who has ever wondered what his role is truly supposed to be, the Academy answers that question fully.

IFC Community/Public Relations Chair – You have an invaluable job. The marketing of fraternity life and the benefits of joining a Greek organization is one area that Academy 2008 will focus on in a way completely unlike anything attempted in past years. We hope this focus on marketing and Public Relations help in many areas across our 800 campuses.

IFC Recruitment Directors – The Academy helps you define the council's role for recruitment. Learn how to promote the fraternity experience and what to expect from chapters.

Campus Advisors – You've wanted to created positive change with your council. You work tirelessly to advance the fraternity community. The Academy is your ally!

Plan now for council budgets to cover the registration and lodging costs for officers. During transition meetings with new council officers, inform them of the need to attend.

Timing and Location top of page

The timing of the Academy is designed to reach the most people at the beginning of their terms. Our research indicates that 65% of councils elect officers in the fall term. The late January date was selected based on feedback from past graduates. They say the timing allows the council to return to campus and have enough time to start the conversations and implement changes.

Since we have decided to host only one Academy this year, we selected Indianapolis to serve as host. Indianapolis is easily accessed for campuses close enough to drive in and is served by a terrific, reasonably priced International Airport .

Indianapolis will allow us to use the resources of the many Inter/National Headquarters and staff that are located here. We intend to include many executive directors in our programming. This may be the first time that many of the officers have the opportunity to visit their headquarters and talk with the staff. Councils could arrange to visit headquarters on either Friday or Sunday.

The Indianapolis Downtown Hilton Hotel has been selected to be our host hotel. The Hilton has a number of unique offerings, including a deluxe room combination that sleeps six comfortably.

While councils are at the Academy, your attention and focus will be fully on the important issues facing your community. However, the downtown location offers you the opportunity to explore within walking distance of the hotel some of the unique characteristics of our great city, such as the NCAA Hall of Champions, Circle Center , and other cultural outlets.
