George Pyne of Theta Delta Chi to Become First Inductee into new NFF Leadership Hall of Fame

The National Football Foundation has announced the creation of the NFF Leadership Hall of Fame which will recognize individuals who have led their organizations to the highest levels of success and share a passion for the NFFs mission of building leaders through football. The first inductee will be George Pyne (Theta Delta Chi at Brown University), IMG Worldwide's President of Sports and Entertainment. The selection of Pyne as the first inductee was announced by NFF chairman Archie Manning (Sigma Nu at University of Mississippi). A former captain of the football team at Brown, Pyne spent 11 years as Chief Operating Officer of NASCAR before going to IMG Worldwide. Under his leadership, IMG entered the collegiate business in May of 2007 with the acquisition of the Collegiate Licensing Company and subsequent purchases of Host Communications and ISP. Pyne will be officially inducted into the NFF Leadership Hall of Fame at an event at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City on September 10th. 

USA Today Features Lambda Chi Alpha’s Charley Trippi as the Oldest Living Number One Draft Pick

The front page feature story in USA Today spotlighted Pro Football Hall of Famer Charley Trippi (Lambda Chi Alpha at University of Georgia), who is now 91 and the oldest living former number one draft choice of the National Football League. The former All-American halfback was drafted first by the Chicago Cardinals in 1945 after getting out of the service. But he returned to Georgia for the 1946 season, won the Maxwell Award and was runner-up for the Heisman Trophy. As a 26-year old NFL rookie, he led Chicago to the 1947 NFL championship and was an All-NFL selection. Trippi played nine seasons with the Cardinals and coached briefly before having a successful career in real estate. The NFL begins its modern-day draft spectacular on Thursday night, April 24th, at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. 

Two Greeks Tie for Third at PGA’s RBC Heritage Event

At Hilton Head, South Carolina over the weekend, two alumni from NIC member fraternities, Luke Donald (Sigma Chi at Northwestern University) and Kevin Streelman (Delta Sigma Phi at Duke University), each won $336,400 for a third place tie at the PGA Tour's RBC Heritage tournament. Both had four round totals of 277, seven strokes under par.

Two Greek Coaching Greats Chosen for the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame

The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame announced its 2013 induction class on April 8th and two of college basketball's coaching greats were named for induction. For Rick Pitino (Lambda Chi Alpha from Massachusets-Amhest), the last 10 days have been great. He became the first head coach to ever win an NCAA national championship at two schools (Kentucky in 1996 and Louisville in 2013); his son was named head coach at Minnesota; and he was chosen for the Hall. After 28 seasons as a head coach, his career mark is now 664-239. Also selected was Guy V. Lewis (Sigma Nu from Houston), who led his Houston Cougars squad to 592 victories and five Final Four appearances over 30 seasons (1957-86). The induction ceremony will take place on Sunday, September 8th, in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Announcing the 2013 All-Fraternity All-American Basketball Team

The North-American Interfraternity Conference is pleased to announce its annual All-Fraternity All-American Basketball Team made up of players from all NCAA Divisions and the NAIA. Our Coach of the Year (for the second straight season) is Rick Pitino of Lambda Chi Alpha, who led his 35-5 Louisville Cardinals to the NCAA championship. Nominations of standout players and coaches came from fraternity headquarters, Greek advisors, sports information directors, Greek alumni and undergraduates. 

The selection committee included Greek sports enthusiasts Jay Langhammer (Delta Tau Delta), Jon Williamson (Lambda Chi Alpha), Charlie Barnes (Pi Kappa Alpha) and Bill Simpson (Theta Chi).

Two Greek Golfers Among the Leaders at the Brazil Open

At the Web.Com Tour's Brazil Open this past weekend, Wes Roach (Kappa Alpha Order from Duke) placed fifth with a four round total of 269, including a third round 63. Scott Dunlap (Delta Tau Delta from Florida) tied for sixth with a 271 total, including a best of 65. Roach won $27,000 while Dunlap earned $21,853.

A Big Night for Sigma Chi’s Luke Bryan

Winning the Entertainer of the Year Award at the 2013 Academy of Country Music Awards show in Las Vegas Sunday night was show co-host Luke Bryan (Sigma Chi at Georgia Southern). Bryan also shared the Vocal Event of the Year Award for "The Only Way I Know", recorded with singers Jason Aldean and Eric Church. He was also nominated in two other categories: Male Vocalist of the Year and Album of the Year ("Tailgates and Tanlines").

Delt Head Coach Scott Drew Leads Baylor to the NIT Basketball Championship

Baylor University head coach Scott Drew, a member of Delta Tau Delta at Butler University, led his Bears squad to a dominating 74-54 victory over the University of Iowa Thursday night, capping off a 23-14 season with the first National Invitation Tournament title in school history. His team previously reached the NIT championship game five years ago. After one year as head coach at Valparaiso (2003) and ten seasons at Baylor, Drew's career record is now 198-144.

NCAA’s “Cinderella Team” Features Two Greeks

The college basketball season's surprise team, Florida Gulf Coast University, has received a tremendous amount of coverage since their upset of Georgetown University and more recent tournament win over San Diego State. Leading the way for the 26-10 Eagles are head coach Andy Enfield (an Alpha Delta Phi from Johns Hopkins University) and starting forward Chase Fieler (a Pi Kappa Alpha at FGSU), who had the nationally viewed one-handed dunk shot late in the Georgetown game. The next big test for Florida Gulf Coast comes Friday night versus the high-ranked University of Florida team, which has won NCAA national titles in 2006 and 2007. 

Delta Sigma Phi’s Streelman Wins First PGA Championship

After competing in 153 tournaments in his professional career, Kevin Streelman (Delta Sigma Phi from Duke University) won his first title at the PGA Tour's Tampa Bay Championship over the weekend. His four round total of 274 (73-69-65-67) was 10 under par and earned him $990,000. He said "Always had a dream of getting here. And so to get this is the culmination of a lot of hard work, time spent late into the evening and getting up early in the morning. And it's really a dream come true." The event's defending champion, Luke Donald (Sigma Chi at Northwestern) wound up in a tie for fourth place and won $227,333. At the Champions Tour Toshiba Classic in Newport Beach, California, Tom Watson (Alpha Sigma Phi at Stanford) placed fifth and earned $83,125.

Football Greats Named to the PFRA Hall of Very Good 2012 Class

The Pro Football Researchers Association recently announced its annual selections for the Hall of Very Good in its January/February issue of The Coffin Corner. Four great players of the past, who are alumni of NIC member fraternities, were selected: linebacker Bill Bergey (Kappa Alpha Order at Arkansas State), defensive end L.C. Greenwood (Phi Beta Sigma at Arkansas-Pine Bluff), quarterback Jack Kemp (Alpha Tau Omega at Occidental) and guard Adolf "Swede" Youngstrom(Phi Sigma Kappa at Dartmouth). Each year, PFRA recognizes star players who had outstanding pro careers but have not been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Since the organization started its Hall of Very Good selections, several men have been inducted into the Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. 

Delta Chi’s Jon Daniels Earns Big Promotion

The American League's Texas Rangers have announced the promotion of Jon Daniels (Delta Chi at Cornell University) from general manager to president of baseball operations/general manager, a title currently held by only one other executive with a big league club. When Daniels became the Rangers' general manager in October of 2005, he was the youngest GM in major league history at age 28. The Rangers have played in their only two World Series since then. Another key executive in the club's front office is senior director of player personnel A.J. Preller, who was a Delta Chi chapter mate of Daniels at Cornell.

Delt McConaughey Wins a Best Supporting Actor Award

The motion picture industry's Independent Spirit Awards ceremony took place in Santa Monica, CA the day before the Academy Awards Oscar celebration. Receiving the ISA trophy for Best Supporting Male Actor for his performance in "Magic Mike" was Matthew McConaughey (University of Texas, 1992).

Delt Golfer Places Fourth at Web.com Event

At the weekend's PGA Web.com Tour event, the Panama Claro Championship, in Panama City, Florida, Scott Dunlap (a member of Delta Tau Delta from the University of Florida) had his highest pro finish of 2013, tying for fourth place with a four round total of 276 (68-70-72-66). For his effort, he earned $24,400.

Sigma Nu’s Doug Parker is the New American Airlines Chief Executive Officer

With the recent merger of American Airllines and US Airways, former USA Airways Chief Executive Offcer Doug Parker (Albion College, 1984) has been named as CEO of American Airlines Group Inc., now an $11 billion airline ready to take on all comers. Parker began his aviation career with American from 1986 until 1991 and later worked for Northwest Airlines and American West before becoming US Airways chairman and CEO in 2005.

Call for Programs for Phi Kappa Psi Woodrow Wilson Leadership School

The Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity would like to announce the opening of our call for programs and facilitators for the 2013 Woodrow Wilson Leadership School (WWLS), held June 25-30, 2013 at Butler University in Indianapolis, IN. The goal of the WWLS is to provide our members and chapter/colony leadership with the necessary tools and best practices to improve themselves and their chapters.

We invite you to submit a program proposal and share your knowledge on a variety of topics with our members. Presentations will be fifty (50) minutes long with ten (10) minutes for questions and answers. Presentations should be focused on one of the seven topic areas: 

- Fraternity Operations & Management
- Service Learning
- Academic & Career Success
- Citizenship
- Health & Wellness
- Life Skills
- Leadership

Facilitators help lead our small group discussions, called Alpha Group Meetings. Alpha Groups are approximately 15-20 people and will meet several times during the conference. Facilitators are expected to follow the curriculum provided and guide conversation in a way that supplements other conference presentations.

Please share these applications with anyone whom you think might be interested in working with fraternity men. We are excited to be broadening our programming and are looking for new ideas and topics.

Two Greeks Help Win a Grammy

At Sunday night's 55th Grammy Awards show, two Greeks from NIC member fraternities helped the Zac Brown Band win the Best Country Album Award for Uncaged. Contributing to the album/CD's success are lead singer Zac Brown (Kappa Alpha Order at West Georgia) and bass player John Driskill Hopkins (Phi Kappa Psi at Georgia).

KA’s Brandt Snedeker Wins Again

The hottest player in professional golf, Brandt Snedeker (Kappa Alpha Order at Vanderbilt), didn't play second fiddle to anyone at the AT&T National Pro-Am at Pebble Beach, California this past weekend. After being runner-up to Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson in the last two weeks, Snederker finished off a record performance with a 7-under 65 on Sunday for a four round 267 total, 19 shots under par. In five 2013 tournaments, he has won two, placed second twice and also had a third place finish. With the first place prize money of $1,170,000, Snedeker is now number four in golf's world ranking, a career best for him. 

KA’s Snedeker Places Second Again

For the second time in a six day period, Brandt Snedeker (Kappa Alpha Order at Vanderbilt) placed second in a PGA Tour event. At the Waste Management Phoenix Open, he carded a 260 total (24 under par) with rounds of 64-66-65-65 to win $669,600. It turned out to be a great week for him, with earnings of more than a million dollars combined at the two tournaments.

Greeks in the Super Bowl

When Super Bowl XLVII kicks off in New Orleans on Sunday, there will be players and one assistant coach from NIC member fraternities involved in the game. Representing the Baltimore Ravens will be offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell (Kappa Alpha Psi from Iowa) and deep snapper Morgan Cox (Phi Gamma Delta from Tennessee). Leading the San Francisco 49ers offense is quarterback Colin Kaepernick (Kappa Alpha  Psi from Nevada-Reno). End Ray McDonald (Phi Beta Sigma from Florida) will be a key 49ers defender and offensive tackle Al Netter (Sigma Alpha Epsilon from Northwestern) is on the 49ers' development squad. CBS color commentator Phil Simms (Tau Kappa Epsilon from Morehead State) will be in the broadcast booth and Solomon Wilcots (Kappa Alpha Psi from Colorado) will be one of two sideline reporters for the network. 

KA’s Snedeker Ties for Second at Farmers Insurance Open

The PGA Tour's Farmers Insurance Open lasted a day longer due to rain delays and wrapped up on Monday, January 28th. Defending champion Brandt Snedeker (Kappa Alpha Order at Vanderbilt) was the leader with a 65 after the first round, slumped to a second round 75 then shot 69 in the third and fourth rounds. His overall 278 was 10 under par and the second place tie netted him earnings of $536,800.

INDIANAPOLIS (January 15, 2013) - The Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity Grand Council announced today that it has appointed Patrick F. Jessee, Purdue '01, as its new Executive Director.

Jessee, an attorney in the Washington D.C. office for the international law firm of Akin Gump Stauss Hauer & Feld, LLP, will start on February 4, 2013 after relocating to the Indianapolis area.

"Our selection committee considered many extraordinary candidates for this position during a nationwide search, but it became very clear Patrick was the right choice to continue our work of Building Better Men and executing Vision 2025. Patrick is a leader with in-depth knowledge and experience and is highly results driven, but most importantly, he has an authentic passion for our mission, to make Delta Sigma Phi America's Leading Fraternity," Christopher S. Edmonds, Grand Council President, said. "Delta Sigma Phi is poised for tremendous growth, and we welcome Patrick to lead the organization at a very exciting time."

Patrick is an accomplished leader with a proven track record of professional excellence and exemplary service to the Fraternity and to his community, continuing to Repay the Debt beyond his college career. He has served as a Deputy Regional Commissioner and as an informal advisor and mentor to the undergraduate brothers at Purdue. He has also engaged the young leaders of our Fraternity as a facilitator at Regional Leadership Academies and Brotherhood Retreats, and he has been a proud member of the 1899 Society since the young age of 23. As an undergraduate, he served as a member of the Undergraduate Advisory Committee from 2003-2005 and as an undergraduate member of the Fraternity's Grand Council from 2005-2007. In his profession, Patrick is a well-respected and highly valued asset to his team at Akin Gump, respected for his project leadership, resourcefulness and exceptional work ethic.

We believe this prestigious honor from the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association is richly deserved, and the dedication Brother Dan has for his art is a characteristic we hope all Phi Sigs will strive for in their chosen fields.

Brother Dan's notoriety and achievements in the sports journalism field make us proud to call him a brother!

Upon the NIC's review of the  National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association (NSSA) honorees for 2013, we noticed that Brad Sham (Alpha Epsilon Pi) was recognized as Texas Sportscaster of the Year.

Congratulations to these two fraternity men that have achieved recognition for their outstanding professional success.

NIC 2012 All-Fraternity All-American Football Teams

The North-American Interfraternity Conference is pleased to announce first teams and honorable mention lists for both NCAA Division I FBS/FCS schools and Divisions II/III & NAIA schools. Among the honorees are Johnny Unitas Award finalist EJ Manuel of Florida State; Orange Bowl MVP Lonnie Pryor of Florida State; Gagliardi Trophy finalist and top college scorer Luke Heinsohn of Washington and Lee; Walter Payton Award finalist Gavin McCarney of Colgate; and Academic All-Americans Chris Looney of Colgate and Ethan Peterson of M.I.T. 

Nominations were submitted by fraternity headquarters, Greek advisors, sports information staffs at schools and by interested individuals. DESCRIPTION
SUMMARY: Lead the Marketing and Communications Department to help reach enterprise goals. The Chief Marketing & Communications Officer works to ensure projects are at the highest levels of accuracy and integrity-without exception. Responsible for setting, monitoring, and adjust departmental workflows. Must act decisively and quickly to identify and rectify organizational constraints or limitations in departmental intellectual assets that are impeding progress. Must be detail oriented and process driven. A strong communicator that delivers concise, clear conditions for success.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the CMCO will serve on the executive team as lead on marketing and communications.
· Develop a long-term vision for the marketing function, drive and integrate new strategies for brand placement, product development, membership growth and retention, corporate partnerships, and vendor management.
· Ideate/develop an integrated brand management approach that reaches across all channels that will include conventions, printed and electronic promotions, like website and social media content.
· Exceptional writer and creative thinker, the CMCO will be knowledgeable about print collateral and design, website development and maintenance, social media, emerging communications technologies, conferences, other speaking opportunities, and media relations.
· Serve as the architect and builder of TKE's marketing strategies that focus on evolving demographic and membership trends.
· Serves as Editor of the fraternity's official publications including The TKE Guide, The Blueprint, and The Teke Magazine, while overseeing and partnering with other managers on production.
· Serve as communications counselor to the CEO and Board of Directors executing effective internal and external communication practices, policies and processes.
· Assist the CEO and key Board Members in preparing and writing correspondences and speeches.
· Provide factual, appropriate and timely information to stakeholders and interested parties through printed and electronic materials.
· Plan and monitor the yearly budget for the Marketing and Communications Department.
· Will work collaboratively with TKE Educational Foundation integrating both organizational plans where appropriate or required.
· Directs marketing team on creation and maintenance of marketing, PR, and social media calendar.
· Strategic thinker and an action-oriented team player who can executive on a variety of day-to-day responsibilities.
· Travel may be required up to 35%.
· Perform other related duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS
QUALIFICATIONS
· 4 year degree in marketing, communications, journalism or related field.
· Preference given to candidates with a master's degree in marketing or communications.
· Min. of 5 years as a senior leader in marketing management.
· Strong working knowledge of nonprofit association management, marketing principles, product and service management.
· Ability to understand the changing environment in higher education dynamics, translating them into actionable strategies.
· Tract record of achieving preset objectives as determined by a marketing plan.
· Manage budgets effectively across multiple departments. Strong understanding of financial reporting, and business processes.
· Excellent oral and written communication skill, strong decision-making and follow through ability
· Team working experience, works well independently and with others
· Ability to respond to shifting priorities quickly, ability to build and maintain relationships with peers and management
· Experience managing and supporting Windows XP and Windows 7, PC skills (MS Office Suite), Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, and other graphic design products.

PGA Tour Season Opens in Hawaii

The 2013 PGA Tour season got underway with the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, under very windy conditions, in Kapalula, Hawaii this past weekend. Getting his season off to a great start was Brandt Snedeker, a member of Kappa Alpha Order at Vanderbilt, who placed third with a 10 under par total of 209 (70-70-69) for the three rounds. His earnings for the event were $432,000. 

Van Pelt of Sigma Chi Places Third at the World Challenge

Golfer Bo Van Pelt, a member of Sigma Chi at Oklahoma State, competed against a number of other PGA Tour top players at the World Challenge tournament at Thousand Oaks, CA over the weekend. Over four rounds, he shot a total of 278 (70-68-70-70) and earned $300,000 for one of his best paydays of 2012. Tying for 13th place and winning $124,500 was Brandt Snedeker, a member of Kappa Alpha Order at Vanderblit University. 

Sigma Chi’s Letterman Wins Kennedy Center Honors

At Sunday night's annual event in Washington, D.C.'s John F. Kennedy Center, comedian and television host David Letterman, a member of Sigma Chi at Ball State University, was the only Greek among the honorees. Before Sunday night's telecast of the event, Letterman expressed his gratitude. He said of the Kennedy Center Honors weekend, "Each minute has been better and better. I was full of trepidation." But getting the medal "supersedes everything." he added. Letterman was happy to share the occasion with loved ones. "It's all about my family, I think they've enjoyed themselves."

Sigma Alpha Mu Fraternity has issued the following press release regarding the activities of a group of men falsely representing themselves as a chapter of the fraternity. Several of these SUNY-Albany students were arrested for alleged hazing activities on November 9, 2012.

Pike E.J. Manuel is a Finalist for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Trophy

Florida State quarterback E.J. Manuel, a member of Pi Kappa Alpha, has been announced as one of the five finalists for the Johnny UnitasGolden Arm Trophy, which is awarded yearly to the top quarterback in the nation. Through the 9-1 Seminoles' first 10 games, he has completed 186 of 272 attempts for 2,641 yards and 19 touchdowns. He is now the top QB candidate for the NIC's yearly All-Fraternity All-American Team for NCAA FBS and FCS schools. At Thursday night's annual CMA Awards show, a number of Greeks from NIC member fraternities were on stage as singers or musicians.Willie Nelson (Tau Kappa Epsilon) performed and received the first annual Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award.

Alpha Sigma Phi Launches the SIG Experience

Alpha Sigma Phi members and leaders from across the country will come together for a week of service, cultural immersion, and values exploration in El Salvador this May. Trip participants will work alongside the people of El Salvador on various projects. Participants will also have the opportunity to interact with local children at an orphanage, work with school children in the communities they visit, and learn more about the cultural and political history of the country. Alpha Sigma Phi is proud to make the El Salvador service immersion trip the first in its Service Immersion Group (SIG) Experience.

From May 25 - June 1, AFLV and Alpha Sigma Phi will partner with the Fuller Center for Housing to plan and implement the service effort. Like most aid organizations in Central America, Fuller Center for Housing (fullercenter.org) is a non-profit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. The organization is dedicated to eliminating poverty worldwide. Its mission is to promote collaborative and innovative partnerships with individuals and organizations in an unrelenting quest to provide adequate shelter for all people in need worldwide. The organization provides the structure, guidance, and support that communities need to build and repair homes for the impoverished in 70 communities and 16 countries.

Nominate Star Players for the 2012 NIC All-Fraternity All-American Teams

The NIC is accepting nominations for college football's All-Fraternity All-American Teams, which will be announced on this website in several months after the final bowl games. There will be a separate first team for NCAA FBS/FCS schools and a first team for NCAA Divisions II/III and NAIA schools, along with a Coach of the Year for both first teams. Lengthy Honorable Mention lists of other leading players and head coaches will also be announced.

The much-acclaimed ABC-TV hit Wednesday night show, Nashville, focuses on the world of longtime superstar Reyna James trying to hold her place as the queen of country music. KA’s Snedeker Hits the FedEx Jackpot

In a playoff round at the PGA Tour Championship, Brandt Snedeker (Kappa Alpha Order at Vanderbilt) had three birdies to win the event in Atlanta and $1,440,000 in earnings, He also finished first in the FedEx Cup final standings, bringing him a $10 million bonus. Other big money winners at the PGA championship were Luke Donald (Sigma Chi at Northwestern), who earned $468,000 in a third place tie, and Bo Van Pelt (Sigma Chi at Oklahoma State), who won $205,760 with a 10th place tie. Both Snedeker, representing the USA, and Donald, playing for his native England, will participate in Ryder Cup competition beginning this weekend.

Brandt Snedeker (Kappa Alpha Order at Vanderbilt) finished second at PGA Tour's The Barclays in Farmingdale, NY and earned $864,000, boosting his 2012 earnings past the $3 million mark. The high finish moved him up to second place on the FedEx Cup standings with 2,694 points and increased his chance of making the U.S. Ryder Cup squad for the September 28-30 matches in Medinah. Romney Picks Delt Paul Ryan as his VP Candidate

GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney has chosen Paul Ryan, a member of Delta Tau Delta at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, as his running mate in the November election. The native of Wisconsin, who first ran for Congress at age 28, is currently chairman of the House Budget Committee. Ryan seeks to become the third Delt in history to serve as United States vice president, the others being Henry Wallace, Iowa State University '10, the 33rd VP (1941-45) and Alben Barkley, Emory University '00, the 35th VP (1949-53).

Two Greeks Finish Among Top Six at the British Open

After leading the first two rounds of the British Open with no bogies, Brandt Snedeker (Kappa Alpha Order at Vanderbilt) finished in a tie for third place and won $464,725. Tying for fifth place with a final round 69 was Luke Donald (Sigma Chi at Northwestern), who won $304,610.

2012 Greeks in the Olympics

The 2012 Olympic Games will take place in London July 27th through August 12th and several alumni from NIC member fraternities will participate as athletes and coaches. The TEAM USA water polo squad features three Kappa Alpha alumni from Stanford: team captain Tony Azevedo, Peter Hudnut and Peter Varellas. Stanford Sigma Alpha Epsilon twins Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan are the top players for the US tennis squad and Northwestern Delta Tau Delta alumnus Jake Herbert is a member of the wrestling team. Phi Kappa Psi alumnus Jerry Colangelo is Managing Director of the TEAM USA basketball squad and Delta Upsilon's Jim Boeheim is one of the two assistant basketball coaches. In a related item, LSU Kappa Alpha Order member Mark LeBlanc will compete in London's Paralympic Games August 31st through September 9th. He is a member of the US sailing team. Phi Gam Rob Riggle Hosts ESPN’s Awards Show

Hosting The ESPYs, ESPN's annual best-in-sports awards show July 11th, is actor-comedian Rob Riggle, a member of Phi Gamma Delta at the University of Kansas. He has been seen on current TV series "Wilfred" and in such films as "21 Jump Street", "The Hangover", "Tropic Thunder" and "Step Brothers", in addition to frequent comedy bits on the Funny or Die Internet site and as a correspondent on The Daily Show. 

Two Florida State Pikes Playing Well on NGA Pro Golf Tour

Two recent Florida State University standout golfers and Pi Kappa Alpha chapter mates are now doing well on the National Golf Association's Pro Golf Tour. On July 2nd and 3rd, Wesley Graham placed second at the NGA's Aberdeen Country Club meet, then won first place honors and $5,000 at the NGA Carolina Summer Series on July 5th and 6th. His final round 64 helped him finish 10 strokes under par. Also playing on the NGA Tour is former Seminoles All-American Drew Kittleson, who tied for seventh at the late May Three Ridges NGA Knoxville Classic. 
The NGA formerly sponsored the Hooters Golf Tour and is now the third largest pro tour in the United States, after the PGA Tour and Web.com Tour. Approximately twenty 72 hole Pro Series events take place each year, allowing younger players a chance to further develop their skills and receiver their PGA Tour cards. 

ATO’s Len Dawson Wins Rozelle Radio-TV Award

Pro Football Hall of Famer Len Dawson, a member of Alpha Tau Omega at Purdue, will be honored again in Canton, Ohio soon for his broadcasting career. The former Kansas City Chiefs quarterback is the recipient of the 2012 Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award for his "long-time exceptional contributions to radio and television in professional football." He has served as a color commentator for the Chiefs Radio Network since 1982 and was an analyst for NBC from 1976 to 1982. Dawson also hosted HBO's Inside the NFL from 1977 to 2001.

Sigma Chi’s Van Pelt Has Best Finish of 2012

Golfer Bo Van Pelt, a Sigma Chi at Oklahoma State, had a second place finish at the AT&T National at Bethesda, Maryland and won $702,000, his highest finish of the PGA Tour so far this year. He was the tournament leader after the first 18 holes with a 67 and finished with a six under par total of 178 over four rounds. 

2012 NIC All-Fraternity All-American Baseball Teams

The North-American Interfraternity Conference is pleased to announce its 2012 selections from all NCAA divisions. Included among our first, second and third All-American teams are College World Series competitors, Academic All-Americans, statistically-ranked leaders and players selected in the major league baseball draft. The first three teams feature players from 14 different NIC groups. Nominations were provided by various NIC member fraternity headquarters, Greek advisors, college sports information directors, individuals via the NIC website and research by Jay Langhammer. A Great Week for Sigma Nu’s Pat Riley

On Tuesday, June 19th, Pat Riley (Sigma Nu at Kentucky) was named the fifth recipient of the 2012 Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by the National Basketball Coaches Association. The third winner of the Daly award, in 2010, was another Sigma Nu alumnus, Tex Winter, who served as an assistant coach when Riley was the head coach of the National Basketball Association's Los Angeles Lakers and Miami Heat. In his current role as president of the Heat, Riley saw his team beat the Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday, June 21st, to win their first NBA title since he led them to the 2006 championship as head coach.

Two Greek Country Stars’ Brothers of the Sun Tour is Underway

The "cover story" in the June 18th USA Today Life section focuses on Lambda Chi Alpha's Kenny Chesney, whose new album/CD "Welcome to the Fishbowl" is in stores on the 19th. He and longtime friend Tim McGraw of Pi Kappa Alpha began their three month Brothers of the Sun tour recently and Chesney said "In all the years I've been doing this, I've never launched a tour and a record at the same time." Chesney's 55 shows in 2011 grossed $84.6 million, according to Billboard Boxscore, and the new tour with McGraw requires 283 crew members, more than 80 tractor-trailers and 20 buses. One of the highlights of the new Chesney CD is a duet with McGraw on Feel Like a Rock Star.

Two Pro Golfers Have a Big Memorial Weekend

Luke Donald (Sigma Chi at Northwestern) successfully defended his title at the European Tour's BMW PGA Championship at Virginia Water, England and moved back to the top spot in the world rankings for the third time in 10 weeks. At the Senior PGA Championship in Benton Harbor, Michigan, Hale Irwin (Phi Gamma Delta at Colorado) shot a final round 68 (274 over four rounds) to rank third and win $143,000.

NFF Selects New College Football Hall of Famers

The National Football Foundation has announced its 2012 class of new inductees into the College Football Hall of Fame and two alumni from NIC member fraternities have been chosen. Both new inductees were star wide receivers for their school in different eras: Hal Bedsole, a member of Phi Kappa Psi at the University of Southern California who played from 1961 through 1963, and Chris Bisaillon, a member of Phi Gamma Delta at Illinois Wesleyan University who set Division III reception records between 1989 and 1982.

National Football Foundation Selects SAE’s George Bodenheimer for Distinguished American Award

The National Football Foundation has announced that ESPN Executive Chairman George Bodenheimer, a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon at Denison University, will be honored with the organization's 2012 NFF Distinguished American Award. Under his leadership, ESPN acquired significant landmark contracts with such major conferences as the ACC, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-12 and SEC, locking in each league for a decade or longer. The network also acquired rights to the Bowl Championship Series beginning with the 2010 season. Bodenheimer also championed ESPN's philanthropic efforts, helping the V Foundation (named in memory of basketball coach Jim Valvano) raise more than $100 million for cancer research since 1993 and spearheading efforts of employees to contribute 30,000 hours of community service in celebration of ESPN's 30th anniversary. The cable sports pioneer will receive his award at the NFF's 55th Annual Awards Dinner December 4th at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City.  

Two Sigma Chis Place Sixth & Seventh at PGA Event

One of the top PGA Tour tournaments of each season is The Players Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. The 2012 event had its fourth and final round on Sunday and two alumni of Sigma Chi were among the leading money winners. Northwestern Sig Luke Donald placed sixth (279) and earned $342,000. Finishing in a three-way tie for seventh place was Oklahoma State Sig Bo Van Pelt, with a 280 total and a $296,083 paycheck. 

Greek Singers Spotlighted in People Magazine’s Country Special

Every few months, People, has produced a Country Special issue featuring a number of leading singers. In the latest special edition, twenty-seven men were pictured in the Country's Hottest Guys 2012 section. Among the group are the following alumni from NIC member fraternities: Dierks Bentley (Sigma Alpha Epsilon), Luke Bryan (Sigma Chi), Kenny Chesney (Lambda Chi Alpha), JT Hodges (Delta Tau Delta), Tim McGraw (Pi Kappa Alpha) and David Nail (Pi Kappa Alpha). Also pictured in the magazine are Charles Kelley (Lambda Chi Alpha) of Lady Antebellum, Zac Brown (Kappa Alpha Order) of the Zac Brown Band and the Eli Young Band (Sigma Nu).

NFL Draftees and Free Agent Signings

It has now been nearly a week since the National Football League draft ended and two members of the 2011 NIC All-Fraternity All-American first team were selected. Going to the Houston Texans in the fifth round was Texas A&M consensus All-American kicker Randy Bullock, a member of Delta Tau Delta. University of Oregon tight end David Paulson, a member of Sigma Nu, was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the seventh round. Since the draft ended, a number of Greek players who were All-Fraternity All-American first teamers and honorable mention picks have signed as free agents with NFL clubs. Signees so far have been offensive tackle Jeff Adams (Columbia Sigma Chi) with the Dallas Cowboys; receiver Derek Carrier (Beloit Sigma Chi) with the Oakland Raiders; running back Nate Eachus (Colgate Delta Upsilon) with the Kansas City Chiefs; defensive back Donnie Fletcher (Boston College Kappa Alpha Psi) with the New York Jets; deep snapper Josh Harris (Auburn Sigma Nu) with the Atlanta Falcons; defensive back Matt Merletti (North Carolina Sigma Chi) with Indianapolis Colts; defensive lineman DaJohn Harris (Southern California Sigma Chi) with the Tennessee Titans; offensive tackle Al Netter (Northwestern Sigma Alpha Epsilon) with the San Francisco 49ers; consensus All-American punter Shawn Powell (Florida State Sigma Phi Epsilon) with the Buffalo Bills; and center William Vlachos (Alabama Kappa Alpha Order) with the Titans. 

SAE’s Bob Baffert Featured in USA Today

With the Kentucky Derby taking place this weekend, the newspaper's May 2nd sports section "cover story" focuses on famed horse trainer Bob Baffert (Sigma Alpha Epsilon at the University of Arizona), who suffered a heart attack while in Dubai on March 26th. After doctors inserted three stents into two arteries, Baffert has made a quick recovery and will be in Lexington Saturday to work with two horses he has trained, Bodemeister (considered one of the favorites) and Liaison. He has trained three previous Derby winners: Silver Charm (1997), Real Quiet (1998) and War Emblem (2002). Last year, Baffert ranked third among horse trainers with earnings of $14,104,834 and was inducted into the Trainer's Hall of Fame in 2009.

Sports Emmy Awards Won by Two Greeks

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced winners of the 33rd annual Sports Emmy awards on April 30th and two alumni of NIC member fraternities were winners. Selected as the Outstanding Sports Personality for play-by-play was Joe Buck (Sigma Nu at Indiana University). The Sports Emmy award winner as Outstanding Sports Personality (sports event analyst) was Cris Collinsworth (Alpha Tau Omega at the University of Florida).

Sigma Chi’s Luke Donald Places Third at Zurich Classic

After shooting a first round 73, last's year's top PGA golfer, Luke Donald (Sigma Chi at Northwestern), rebounded with three strong rounds (65-66-67) to finish third at the PGA Tour's Zurich Classic of New Orleans. His 17 under total of 271 netted him a pay day of $435,200 and moved him past Rory McIlroy into the number one spot in the 2012 World Golf Rankings.

Basketball Hall of Fame to Induct Two More Greeks

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts has announced their new induction class and two men from NIC member fraternities will be inducted. The new class includes OlympianDon Barksdale (Alpha Phi Alpha at UCLA) and Nike co-founder Phil Knight (Phi Gamma Delta at University of Oregon). The induction ceremonies will take place in Springfield on September 7th.

Sigma Nu’s Eli Young Band Wins Big Honor at Academy of Country Music Awards Show

The 47th Academy of Country Music Awards Show in Las Vegas featured several alumni of NIC member fraternities. Winning top honors for the song of the year, "Crazy Girl", was the Eli Young Band, whose four members met while in the Sigma Nu chapter at University of North Texas. Charles Kelley (Lambda Chi Alpha at University of Georgia) and Lady Antebellum were named the ACM's top vocal group. In Blake Shelton's acceptance speech as the male vocalist award winner, he quoted lyrics from the song "Home" by fellow singer Dierks Bentley (Sigma Alpha Epsilon at University of Vermont). Zac Brown (Kappa Alpha Order at the University of West Georgia) and his group, the Zac Brown Band, performed one of their big songs. Tying for the most ACM nominations with nine was Kenny Chesney (Lambda Chi Alpha at East Tennessee State). Actor Ashton Kutcher (Delta Chi at University of Iowa) presented Miranda Lambert with the female vocalist of the year award. 

Coordinator of Greek Life Job Posting at University of Nevada - Reno

The University of Nevada, Reno is looking for a full time Administrative Faculty member to serve as Coordinator of Greek Life.  The Coordinator of Greek Life, reporting to the Dean of Students, is a key part of the Student Life Services department. The individual advises the Inter- Fraternity Council (IFC), Panhellenic Council, Multicultural Greek Council and individual Greek honorary organizations. The Coordinator serves as a resource to the leadership of individual fraternities and sororities and designs, implements and evaluates membership development programs as well as recruitment and retention programs. The Coordinator serves as the primary contact person for all official inquiries about the Greek system from national/international representatives, community constituents, current and potential students. The Coordinator works closely with the Dean of Students to plan, design and evaluate the area of Greek Life in support of departmental goals and objectives; interacting on police investigations,  responding to media inquiries and emergencies involving Greek chapter houses and Greek student involvement.  The Coordinator supports and participates in late night/weekend activities and emergencies in addition to maintaining regular business hours.

Seven Greeks Are Finalists for Sports Emmy Awards

The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has announced five finalists in each of five major categories for outstanding broadcasting of televised sporting events. Seven of the Sports Emmy Award nominees are alumni of NIC member fraternities. The Outstanding Play-by-Play nominees are Marv Albert (Sigma Alpha Mu), Joe Buck (Sigma Nu) and Al Michaels (Sigma Nu). Nominated in the Outstanding Game Analyst category is Cris Collinsworth (Alpha Tau Omega) while Dan Patrick (Phi Sigma Kappa) is a nominee for Outstanding Studio Host. The Outstanding Studio Analyst category includes Skip Bayless (Phi Kappa Sigma) and Collinsworth of ATO. One of five nominees for Outstanding Sports Personality (Reporter) is Craig Sager (Delta Tau Delta). The Sports Emmy Awards winners will be announced in Rose Hall at Lincoln Center on April 30th.

Tau Delta Phi Fraternity Hires First, Full Time, Paid Staff Member in 40 Years

March 20, 2012) New York, NY-- Sunday, at the Tau Delta Phi Executive Council Meeting, the Executive Council (the Fraternity's Board of Directors) unanimously approved that a contract for the position of Executive Director be given to Shawn M. Dowiak, PGC, CK.  Shawn holds his Bachelors degree in Psychology and Literature from Ramapo College of New Jersey, and earned his first Masters in Teaching from Teachers College, Columbia University in the City of New York.  He completed his second Masters in Educational Leadership, Management, and Policy from Seton Hall University in 2009.  Shawn became a member of Tau Delta Phi while he was an undergraduate at Ramapo College in 1997. Upon his appointment, Shawn was quoted as saying, "The Fraternity has meant so much to me personally, and the values of the Fraternity have transformed my life.  I look forward to serving the Fraternity as Executive Director, and I am thankful for the confidence placed in me by the members of the Executive Council."  

Grand Consul (National President) Michael Reuter had this to say, "The growth that the Fraternity has exhibited over the last several years, both internally and externally, have demonstrated that we needed to make the move to a full time paid staff in order to continue our forward movement.  Shawn was the right candidate for the job, and the Executive Council voted unanimously to approve his contract."  

The Executive Council also honored Philip Nichtern, PGC, CK, Sunday evening by naming him Executive Director Emeritus.  "Phil's dedication to the Fraternity over the last four decades has been paramount to where we are today.  He has done much for Tau Delta Phi, and we are thankful for his service to the Fraternity during that time"  said Shawn Dowiak.

Tau Delta Phi has many plans for the future of the Fraternity, and the implementation of this full time position is just one of many benchmarks setting up the Fraternity for continued success.

Sigma Chi’s Luke Donald Wins the Transitions Championship

Winning a four-man playoff with a 5-under 66 was Luke Donald (Sigma Chi at Northwestern), who earned $990,000 at the PGA Tour's Transitions Championship in Palm Harbor, Florida. With his fifth win in his last 31 starts around the world, Donald returned to the number 1 world ranking and will stay there until he gets to the Augusta National tournament. Finishing ninth over the weekend was Bo Van Pelt (Sigma Chi at Oklahoma State), who won $159,500.

Five Greeks Chosen for the Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame

The new 10-member class to be inducted into the Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame includes five men from NIC member fraternities. Named in the players category were longtime National Basketball Association stars Clyde Lovellette (Sigma Chi at Kansas) and Willis Reed (Phi Beta Sigma at Grambling). One of the two coaches chosen is Joe B. Hall (Alpha Tau Omega at Kentucky), who posted a 297-100 record and won the 1978 NCAA championship. Going into the Hall for their contributions are Joe Dean (Sigma Chi at Louisiana State), who was a star player, broadcaster and athletic director at LSU, and Jim Host (Delta Tau Delta at Kentucky), founder of Host Communications and the man who pioneered the NCAA tournament's promotion and marketing operations. The seventh annual induction ceremonies will take place on November 18th in Kansas City, MO.

Two Greeks Chosen for Induction into the College Baseball Hall of Fame

The College Baseball Hall of Fame in Lubbock, Texas has announced its' 2012 Hall of Fame inductees class and two of the seven inductees are members of NIC member fraternities. Outfielder Lou Brock, a member of Phi Beta Sigma at Southern University, played on the Southern squad that won the 1959 NAIA College World Series before starting a great major league career which resulted in his induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. One of three head coaches selected is the late Frank Sancet, who became a member of Sigma Chi at the University of Arizona and served as head coach of the Wildcats from 1950 to 1972. He retired as the second-winningest college baseball head coach with a record of 832-238-2. Brock and Sancet will be inducted into the Hall of Fame as part of the College Baseball Night of Champions celebration June 29-30 in Lubbock.

Chris Doleman of Alpha Phi Alpha Chosen for Pro Football Hall of Fame

During Super Bowl weekend, the Pro Football Hall of Fame announced its class of 2012 and the only Greek chosen was linebacker/defensive end Chris Doleman, a member of Alpha Phi Alpha from the University of Pittsburgh, who played for the Minnesota Vikings, Atlanta Falcons and San Francisco 49ers from 1985 to 1999. Doleman recorded 150.5 sacks (fourth-highest NFL career total), was NFC Defensive Player of the Year in 1992 and was selected for eight Pro Bowls. The induction of the six new members will take place on August 4th in Canton, Ohio.  

Sigma Nu’s Eli Manning Named Super Bowl MVP

After leading the New York Giants to a fourth quarter 21-17 comeback victory over the New England Patriots, quarterback Eli Manning, a Sigma Nu at Mississippi, was chosen as Super Bowl Most Valuable Player for the second time. He completed 30 of 40 passes for 296 yards and a touchdown and was previously named MVP four years ago in Super Bowl XLII. Numerous alumni of NIC member fraternities have been named Super Bowl MVP, but Manning is just the second two-time winner, the other being Terry Bradshaw, a Tau Kappa Epsilon at Louisiana Tech, in the game's 13th and 14th years. On hand to see Eli's outstanding performance were father Archie Manning (Sigma Nu at Mississippi), longtime NFL quarterback who is chairman of the National Football Foundation College Football Hall of Fame, mother Olivia Williams Manning (Delta Gamma at Mississippi) and older brother Cooper Manning (Kappa Alpha Order at Mississippi). Key Giants' key coaches are both members of Tau Kappa Epsilon: offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride (Southern Connecticut State) and defensive coordinator Perry Fewell (Lenoir-Rhyne).  

Robert Kraft of Zeta Beta Tau is on the Cover of Sports Illustrated

With Super Bowl XLVI being the nation's big weekend event, the February 6th issue of Sports Illustrated features New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, a member of Zeta Beta Tau at Columbia, on the cover and in a feature profile entitled "Kraftwork". The profile describes how Kraft has turned the Patriots into the National Football League's model franchise. Also playing prominent roles in Sunday's game will be Patriots head coach Bill Belichick (Chi Psi at Wesleyan), New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning (Sigma Nu at Mississippi), Patriots defensive end Ron Brace(Iota Phi Theta at Boston College) and Giants long snapper Zak DeOssie (Theta Delta Chi at Brown).

Two Greeks Named Head Coaches by NFL Teams

Two of the seven new head coaches hired so far by National Football League clubs since the end of the 2011 season are in NIC member fraternities. On January 20th, the Miami Dolphins named Joe Philbin, a Lambda Chi Alpha from Washington & Jefferson, as the 10th head coach in club history. He spent the last nine years on the Green Bay Packers coaching staff with the last five as offensive coordinator. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers hired Greg Schiano, a Phi Gamma Delta from Bucknell, on January 26th after 11 seasons as head coach at Rutgers. Previously, he was an NFL assistant coach with the Chicago Bears from 1996 to 1998.

KA’s Snedeker Wins Over A Million in his third PGA championship

At the PGA Tour's Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego, Brandt Snedeker, a member of Kappa Alpha Order at Vanderbilt, tied for the lead after four rounds with a 272 total, then won the second playoff hole to earn $1,080,000 for his third victory since joining the PGA Tour. Before earning his first Tour win in 2007, he trailed by five shots entering the final round. His second title at the 2011 Heritage came after trailing by six shots after three rounds. The Farmers event was similar to his earlier wins as he started the fourth round seven shots behind.

Greeks Receive Academy Award Nominations

With the official announcement of Oscar candidates on January 25th, several of Hollywood's leading Greeks in the motion picture industry will be in the spotlight when Oscar night happens on February 26th. Best Actor nominee Brad Pitt (Sigma Chi) starred in Best Picture-nominated Moneyball and also was a co-producer of the film. Pitt also had a leading role in Best Picture nominee The Tree of Life. Another Best Picture nominee, War Horse, was directed byStephen Spielberg (Theta Chi), who, surprisingly, did not get a Best Director nomination. Grant Heslov (Phi Kappa Psi) is a co-nominee for Adapted Screenplay on The Ides of March, which he co-produced.

Beta Theta Pi’s Ben Flajnik is “The Bachelor”

The 23rd season of ABC-TV's popular show, "The Bachelor", premiered on January 2nd with Ben Flajnik, a member of Beta Theta Pi from the University of Arizona, in the spotlight. The 29-year old California winemaker will "face off" against 25 single women who will be vying for his interest over the next several months. Prior to the show's opening episode, Flajnik was interviewed on the network's "Good Morning America" show. 

Sigma Chi’s Donald Wraps up Historic Double

Luke Donald (Sigma Chi from Northwestern) has become the first golfer to win both the PGA Tour and European Tour money titles in the same year. After taking five weeks off from golf due to the death of his father and birth of his second child, he returned to play in the European Tour's Dubai World Championship and placed third with a four-round 272 total. Donald's earnings in Dubai put him more than $1.34 million ahead of second place finisher Rory McIlroy on the final European Tour money list.

Delt Randy Bullock Wins Lou Groza Award

At the ESPN College Football Awards Show in Lake Buena Vista, FL, Texas A&M's Randy Bullock, a member of Delta Tau Delta, was named winner of the Lou Groza Award as the top collegiate placekicker in 2011. The award's namesake was a member of Alpha Tau Omega at Ohio State before a lengthy pro career and ultimate election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Bullock led the NCAA in field goals with a 2.08 per game average on 25 of 29 attempts, scored 127 points in 2011 and became the school career scoring leader with 349 points. The Fred Biletnikoff Award for the nation's top pass catcher was presented by Biletnikoff himself, a member of both the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame after becoming a member of Lambda Chi Alpha at Florida State. Also presenting an award was College Football Hall of Fame member and NFL great Calvin Hill, a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon at Yale. Taking part in some interviews during the two hour TV coverage was longtime ESPN analyst Lee Corso, a member of Alpha Tau Omega at Florida State. 

KA’s Tim McCarver Chosen for Hall of Fame’s Broadcasting Wing

Longtime TV analyst Tim McCarver, a member of Kappa Alpha Order at Memphis State, was selected by a 20-person panel for enshrinement next July in the broadcasting wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. The 21-year major league catcher has called baseball on NBC, ABC and CBS before joining Fox Sports. His work has defined World Series TV analysis and he broadcast his 22nd Fall Classic in 2011.

National Football Foundation Dinner Celebrates Numerous Greeks

At the Waldorf-Astoria in New York on Tuesday night, the National Football Foundation's Annual Awards Dinner honored the best and brightest undergraduates and prominent alumni from NIC member fraternities. NFF Board Member and noted philanthropist T. Boone Pickens (Sigma Alpha Epsilon at Oklahoma State) provided the welcome address and Dr. Archie Roberts (Alpha Chi Rho at Columbia), a pioneering heart surgeon, accepted the NFF Distinguished American Award. The 2011 College Football Hall of Fame class was also honored and included wide receiver Carlos Alvarez (Alpha Tau Omega at Florida), fullback Bill Enyeart (Phi Gamma Delta at Oregon State), running back Eddie George (Kappa Alpha Psi at Ohio State), quarterback Sandy Stephens (Alpha Phi Alpha at Minnesota) and linebackerDarryl Talley (Kappa Alpha Psi at West Virginia). Quarterback Patrick Witt (Delta Kappa Epsilon at Yale) was presented as a member of the 2011 class of NFF National Scholar-Athletes. Ted Ruta (Sigma Phi Epsilon at Florida State) was the recipient of the NFF's Outstanding Football Official Award. 

Theta Chi’s Steven Spielberg is on the Cover of Entertainment Weekly

One of Hollywood's top filmmakers, Steven Spielberg, a member of Theta Chi at Cal State-Long Beach, is on the cover of the December 9th issue of Entertainment Weekly. The creator of such epic films as E.T., Jaws, Jurassic Park, andRaiders of the Lost Ark, is profiled in a 10-page interview which touches on two new films The Adventures of Tintin and War Horse and other highlights of his 27-year career. 

Ron Santo of Lambda Chi Alpha is chosen for Baseball’s Hall of Fame

Longtime Chicago Cubs third baseman Ron Santo, who was initiated into Lambda Chi Alpha at Illinois State, has been selected by the Golden Era Committee for induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. A nine-time All-Star who hit 342 home runs and won five Gold Gloves, he will become the 12th third baseman to go into the HOF. Santo, who passed away December 3rd of 2010, will be posthumously inducted in Cooperstown, NY next July 22nd.

Sigma Chi’s Valentine Back as a Big League Manager

Bobby Valentine, a member of Sigma Chi at the University of Southern California, will be back in the dugout this spring as manager of the Boston Red Sox. A former manager of the Texas Rangers and New York Mets, he has since spent seven seasons managing in Japan and the last two years as an ESPN analyst.

Two Sigma Chis Named to PFRA’s Hall of Very Good

The Professional Football Researchers Association, in its publication The Coffin Corner, has announced its Hall of Very Good class of 2011. Among nine former pro football greats selected are two members of Sigma Chi fraternity: longtime Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Andy Russell, who went to the University of Missouri, and Lou Saban, who went to Indiana University before four years as player for the Cleveland Browns. His greatest fame came in the American Football League as head coach of the Boston Patriots (1960-61), Buffalo Bills (1962-65, 1972-76) and Denver Broncos (1967-71). During his first stint with the Bills, his teams won two AFL championships. Each year, members of the PFRA vote on leading pro players who had great careers but have not been chosen for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. 

Two Greeks Win CMA Awards

Two members of NIC fraternities were big winners at the Country Music Awards show and several other Greeks were award nominees. Receiving the Vocal Group of the Year award was Lady Antebellum, featuring co-lead singer Charles Kelley, a Lambda Chi Alpha from Georgia. Also nominated in the same category was the Zac Brown Band, led byZac Brown, member of Kappa Alpha Order at West Georgia. Brown's group also received nominations for best single and song ("Cold Weather") and Album of the Year ("You Get What You Give").

The other major Greek winner was Kenny Chesney, a member of Lambda Chi Alpha from East Tennessee State, who, along with singer Grace Potter, won Music Video of the Year for "You and Tequila". Chesney also was a nominee for Male Vocalist of the Year. One of the five nominees for Best New Artist of the year was Luke Bryan, a member of Sigma Chi at Georgia Southern.
