Nominate Basketball & Baseball Stars for NIC’s All-Fraternity All-American Teams
The North-American Interfraternity Conference will select its annual All-Fraternity All-American Basketball Team made up of leading players who are members of NIC member fraternities. A first team, coach of the year and honorable mention list will be announced after the Final Four is completed. Nominations should be sent to Jay Langhammer at www.Jlangha132@aol.com. As new names are received and checked out, they will be added to this list over the next month.
Chris Doleman of Alpha Phi Alpha Chosen for Pro Football Hall of Fame
During Super Bowl weekend, the Pro Football Hall of Fame announced its class of 2012 and the only Greek chosen was linebacker/defensive end Chris Doleman, a member of Alpha Phi Alpha from the University of Pittsburgh, who played for the Minnesota Vikings, Atlanta Falcons and San Francisco 49ers from 1985 to 1999. Doleman recorded 150.5 sacks (fourth-highest NFL career total), was NFC Defensive Player of the Year in 1992 and was selected for eight Pro Bowls. The induction of the six new members will take place on August 4th in Canton, Ohio.
Sigma Nu’s Eli Manning Named Super Bowl MVP
After leading the New York Giants to a fourth quarter 21-17 comeback victory over the New England Patriots, quarterback Eli Manning, a Sigma Nu at Mississippi, was chosen as Super Bowl Most Valuable Player for the second time. He completed 30 of 40 passes for 296 yards and a touchdown and was previously named MVP four years ago in Super Bowl XLII. Numerous alumni of NIC member fraternities have been named Super Bowl MVP, but Manning is just the second two-time winner, the other being Terry Bradshaw, a Tau Kappa Epsilon at Louisiana Tech, in the game's 13th and 14th years. On hand to see Eli's outstanding performance were father Archie Manning (Sigma Nu at Mississippi), longtime NFL quarterback who is chairman of the National Football Foundation College Football Hall of Fame, mother Olivia Williams Manning (Delta Gamma at Mississippi) and older brother Cooper Manning (Kappa Alpha Order at Mississippi). Key Giants' key coaches are both members of Tau Kappa Epsilon: offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride (Southern Connecticut State) and defensive coordinator Perry Fewell (Lenoir-Rhyne).
Robert Kraft of Zeta Beta Tau is on the Cover of Sports Illustrated
With Super Bowl XLVI being the nation's big weekend event, the February 6th issue of Sports Illustrated features New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, a member of Zeta Beta Tau at Columbia, on the cover and in a feature profile entitled "Kraftwork". The profile describes how Kraft has turned the Patriots into the National Football League's model franchise. Also playing prominent roles in Sunday's game will be Patriots head coach Bill Belichick (Chi Psi at Wesleyan), New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning (Sigma Nu at Mississippi), Patriots defensive end Ron Brace(Iota Phi Theta at Boston College) and Giants long snapper Zak DeOssie (Theta Delta Chi at Brown).
