Rookie Delt Pitcher Featured in USA Today Sports Weekly

The June 30-July 6 issue now at newstands has a full page feature titled "Fun and success in Strasburg's shadow" on Washington Nationals relief pitcher Drew Storen, a member of Delta Tau Delta at Stanford University. The 10th player chosen in the 2009 baseball draft, he has raced to the big leagues in just 11 months. Since his May debut, he has posted a 1.89 ERA and 2-1 record out of the bullpen. With sensational teammate Stephen Strasburg gaining headlines, Storen has taken a back seat. If he was on any other team's big league roster, he would likely be considered the super phenom of the team.

SAE Head Coach Wins 11th NBA Title

Los Angeles Lakers head coach Phil Jackson, a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon at the University of North Dakota, took his squad to its second straight National Basketball Association championship and fifth in the last 11 seasons. It was the first time the Lakers had beaten the Boston Celtics in game seven of a championship series. Jackson previously led the Chicago Bulls to six NBA titles.

Two Greek Head Coaches to Meet in College World Series Action

TCU head baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle, a member of Lambda Chi Alpha, and Florida State head coach Mike Martin, a member of Pi Kappa Alpha, will play each other in the opening round of the College World Series this weekend in Omaha, Nebraska. The Horned Frogs, with a 51-12 record, go to their first CWS tournament while the 47-18 Seminoles make their 20th appearance in Omaha.

Phi Gam Derek Eitel is Rose-Hulman’s First Drafted Athlete

Pitcher Derek Eitel, a member of Phi Gamma Delta, became the first athlete in Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology history to be selected in a professional sports player draft. He was chosen in the 17th round of the major league baseball draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks. A two sport standout for Rose-Hulman, he set a baseball team record with 29 career victories and was 2009 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year as a quarterback.

Teke Owner’s Horse Wins Belmont Stakes

In the final leg of horse racing's Triple Crown, longshot Drosselmeyer, co-owned by Tau Kappa Epsilon's Kenny Trout, staged a stirring stretch run to win the 142nd running of the Belmont Stakes in New York. Drosselmeyer's victory gave Troutt a second Triple Crown jewel this year after Super Saver won the Kentucky Derby. Finishing fourth at the Belmont was Game On Dude, trained by Bob Baffert of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and placing sixth was Interactif, trained by Todd Pletcher of Pi Kappa Alpha.

Delt Golf Coach Leads Purdue Women to NCAA Title

Head coach Devon Brouse, a member of Delta Tau Delta at Purdue University, led his alma mater's women's team to the 2010 NCAA national championship and was named National Coach of the Year by the National Golf Coaches Association. He took over as head coach of both the women's and men's teams at Purdue in 1998. His 2010 women's team won its third straight Big Ten title and his men's squad placed fifth in the Big Ten.

Luke Donald of Sigma Chi Wins Madrid Masters

Over Memorial weekend, the European PGA Tour's Madrid Masters was won by Sigma Chi's Luke Donald, a native of England and graduate of Northwestern University. It was his first win in four years, the last one being the Honda Classic in March of 2006. His four round total of 267 (65-67-68-67) was 21 strokes under par and gave him put him one stroke ahead of second place finisher Rhys Davies.
