ATO Head Coach Leads Butler to Final Four

In just his third season as a college head coach, Brad Stevens, an Alpha Tau Omega alumnus from DePauw University, has taken his 30-4 Butler Bulldogs to NCAA Division I basketball's Final Four, which takes place in the school's hometown of Indianapolis. His first Butler team also posted a 30-4 record in 2008 and his 88 career wins are more than any other head coach in his first three seasons. The Bulldogs will open up Final Four competition with a Saturday night game versus Michigan State.

Kappa Alpha Society Alumnus Stars in Hit TV Show “Castle”

Playing the role of mystery novelist Richard Castle in the hit ABC-TV show is Nathan Fillion, a member of Kappa Alpha Society from the University of Alberta. Now in it's second season in the 9PM central time zone slot, the show's recent two-parter entitled "Boom!" had over 14 million viewers, prompting ABC to announce the renewal of the series for a third season of 22 new episodes.

SAE Baseball Coach Wins His 1,000th Game

Current Sam Houston State University head coach Mark Johnson, a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon at University of New Mexico, won his 1,000th victory,8-6 over University of Texas-San Antonio, on Sunday, March 28th. He currently ranks 16th in wins among active coaches in NCAA Division I baseball. Before joining the Sam Houston athletic department in July of 2006, he served as head baseball coach at Texas A&M from 1984 through 2005.

NIC Announces 2010 Award of Distinction Winners

The North-American Interfraternity Conference (NIC) is pleased to announce the winners of the 2010 Award of Distinction.  The Awards will be presented in three categories at the NIC Annual Meeting in April.  The selection committee is very pleased to report that 2010 represented a 20% increase in the number of nominations received over 2009. 

The Undergraduate Award of Distinction seeks to recognize the man who has found in his fraternity experience an outlet for developing as both a leader and a better man.  The 2010 winners are

  • Terence "Sean" Dunn; a member of Lambda Chi Alpha from the University of Tennessee - Chattanooga.
  • Nicolai Lundy; a member of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity from Emory University
  • Daniel Neumann; a member of Theta Chi Fraternity from Case Western Reserve University
  • Branden Stewart; a member of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity from Grand Valley State University

The Chapter Award of Distinction recognizes the undergraduate chapter which is highly functioning, in compliance with NIC Standards, seeks to educate others about the benefits of a values based fraternity experience, and works to maintain a healthy relationship with their inter/national organization and the host institution.  The 2010 winners are:

  • The  Belmont University Chapter of Alpha Tau Omega
  • The Georgia Tech Chapter of Delta Chi Fraternity
  • The Loyola University-Chicago Chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon

The Alumni Award of Distinction recognizes the fraternity man who has given specifically of his time, talents, and service to the betterment of the fraternity.  The service can be given at the local, regional, or national level.  The 2010 winner is:

  • TJ Sullivan, a member of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity

SAE’s Greg McElroy Profiled in The Sporting News

NIC All-Fraternity All-American first team quarterback Greg McElroy, a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon at the University of Alabama, is featured in a one page story entitled "The Way I See It" in the March 15th edition of The Sporting News. He led the Crimson Tide to the BCS championship and returns this fall for his final season of eligibility. An excellent student, McElroy posted a undergrad GPA of 3.86 and has been working toward a master's degree in sports management.

Lambda Chi Alpha’s Kelley a Major Part of Lady Antebellum

Country music's hottest trio is Lady Antebellum, featurig co-lead singer Charles Kelley, a Lambda Chi from University of Georgia. The group was featured as the cover story in the Life section of the March 10th edition of USA Today as a result of its second album, Need You Now, selling a half-million copies in its first week in stores. Sales have now surpassed 1.2 million and hit songs off the album are now in the country top 20. The group, which is touring with Pi Kappa Alpha's Tim McGraw during much of 2010, recently received seven nominations for April's Academy of Country Music Awards show

Nominate Greeks for NIC All-Fraternity All-American Basketball & Baseball Teams

The North-American Interfraternity Conference will be announcing its annual All-Fraternity All-American selections on this website in the coming months. If you know of good intercollegiate players who are Greeks at any NCAA or NAIA school in either basketball or baseball, please send their names, fraternity afiliations and schools to Jay Langhammer at Jlangha132@aol.com. Watch lists in both sports will be posted in the Greeks in Sports sections in the near future. The basketball first team and honorable mention selections should be annoucned on this website in early April. Baseball first teamers and honorable mention picks should be announced in June after the College World Series. Since we select a Coach of the Year in each sport, you can also provide names of outstanding head coaches to be considered. To view past selections in each sport, click on the NIC website's PRESS ROOM link, then go to Greeks in Sports and scroll down to a sport.
