NIC Resolution
Resolution in Support of Diversity and Inclusiveness
MOTION
Upon proper motion and second the House of Delegates passed a resolution in Support of Diversity and Inclusiveness within the Greek Community.
RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT
OF DIVERSITY AND INCLUSIVENESS
WITHIN THE GREEK COMMUNITY
Whereas , the members of the North-American Interfraternity Conference and the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Inc., believe in the importance of creating an inclusive and welcoming Greek Community; and
Whereas , the universities which welcome Fraternities as integral members of the campus community are focusing their resources and energy in creating an inclusive campus environment; and
Whereas , our organizations are made up of nearly 400,000 undergraduate members and nearly 5 million alumni from all walks of life; and
Whereas , the fraternal ideals of leadership, community building, service to others, and maintaining high values are shared by all members of the Greek community; and
Whereas , some members of fraternities fell short in living up to these stated ideals during Halloween 2001 and 2002, through the wearing of inappropriate costumes and/or because of the disrespectful behaviors of some people; and
Whereas , because of these actions some people within our community were hurt and offended; therefore,
Be it resolved , that the leadership of the North-American Interfraternity Conference and National Pan-Hellenic Council call upon the members of our organizations to provide meaningful diversity and inclusiveness programming to all their members and to communicate the need for our members to live up to their stated fraternal values, through their words and actions; and
Be it further resolved , that the leadership of both organizations encourage all our members to work together on campuses to establish a welcoming and inclusive campus community; and
Be it further resolved , that our organizations remain committed to addressing these important issues and providing the necessary resources, support and encouragement in dealing with them.
President Pease recognized Augustin Garcia, Lambda Theta Phi, who commended the effort with the resolution on diversity and encouraged the Conference to make the same efforts of outreach to the Latino organizations.
