New opinion research shows benefits of being Greek ... and the growing gap between Greeks and Independents...
Commenting on the findings of an in-depth opinion survey in 2000-2001 among students on 12 representative U.S. campuses, Esther Thorson, Associate Dean for Graduate Studies at the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Journalism, concludes, "Our research confirms Greeks are more enthusiastic about their college experience and their institutions. It also highlights a deepening divide in perception about Greek life between Greeks and Independents."
The findings of the latest Research Initiative sponsored by the North-American Interfraternity Conference and the National Panhellenic Conference show us the very positive reasons why undergraduates become Greek... and the reasons why other undergraduates choose to remain Independent. The survey included more than 1,100 freshmen and nearly 1,200 upperclass students.
Some of the most important finding are summarized in this report. Equally important and useful to us as Greeks is the commentary by leading figures in the Greek movement and in universities. Their comments offer practical advice on how to make use of the research findings... how to achieve positive results that will strengthen Greek organizations.
