NIC Press Release
Fraternityinfo.com Awards Four High School Seniors with Cash Scholarships
Four high school seniors were each awarded a $500 cash scholarship as a part of a contest sponsored by www.fraternityinfo.com. The award recipients were chosen at random from Web site respondents.
Brian Vanecek from Council Bluffs, Iowa is the first of the four randomly-selected winners. Vanecek will attend Iowa State University this fall and seeks to earn double-major in computer science and computer engineering. After college, he plans to become a computer programmer and hopes his broad education will provide him with versatility in the workplace. Vanecek recently attended a Greek Week senior retreat and said that his perception of fraternities drastically changed over the course of the event. Prior to the retreat, Vanecek had a "Animal House" perception of the Greek community. The retreat, he said, dispelled these misconceptions and made him realize that the Fraternity life was for him. Vanecek has already received a bid to join the Triangle Fraternity. When asked about what he planned to do with the $500, Vanecek said that he planned to put the money toward tuition.
Sean Brueneman was also chosen to receive a scholarship. Brueneman is a Cincinnati native who will attend Bowling Green State University this fall. Brueneman is considering journalism or early childhood education as his field of study. The inbound freshman described himself as a devout Cincinnati Reds fan who also enjoys hockey, football, and basketball. He also enjoys reading and writing poetry; his favorite poet is Walt Whitman. If he chooses journalism, Brueneman hopes to go into sports writing; his ideal job would be working for ESPN. Among other things, Brueneman is excited about being on his own in college and trying new things. Brueneman said that he plans to use the money toward tuition and books.
Jonathon Johnson, a high school senior from Newport News, Virginia, will also receive the $500 scholarship. He plans to attend Old Dominion University in the fall to study computer engineering. Johnson looks forward to a career in the growing computer field.
